Business Intelligence Bi Developer Salary
I have worked with data in several forms for ~20 years including work as a business analyst, data warehouse developer/analyst, business intelligence analyst, data engineer, data analytics lead instructor, etc.
Career Opportunities In Artificial Intelligence
I started teaching SQL workshops at GA at their campus in Atlanta and it grew into other workshops / bootcamps related to data and became a teacher for Data Analytics Online and for Atlanta. When I was offered the role of teaching courses in my field for GA I was excited to share my knowledge with others who want to learn this industry.
Business Intelligence (BI) combines data-centric strategies, methods, and technologies. BI includes common functions such as data mining, process analysis, data visualization and analytics, performance management, predictive/prescriptive analytics, reporting and dashboards. BI may have members such as visualization and data analysts, data engineers, business intelligence analysts, and data scientists.
Can you give us an example of a problem/question that a BI Analyst might be asked to solve on the job?
The job of a Business Intelligence Analyst varies by company, but the main questions are usually around KPIs. How is the company performing? What are trade marks? A BI Analyst takes a top-down approach to answering questions. Let’s say my company’s sales are down, for example. The BI Analyst is tasked with finding out if that decline is from a specific region, a product/service, a specific sales rep, etc.
Mastering The Art Of Business Analytics: The Most Prestigious Business Intelligence Certifications Of 2023
In general, BI Analysts work to ensure that data is ready for use from sources and work with other roles such as Database Administrators and Data Engineers. Data Analysts work more closely with customers (internal and external) to meet their data needs and they also work with BI Analysts. Many times these roles are actually mixed. Payscale.com offers a list of tasks per role.
Anyone looking to get into BI must have knowledge and skills both technical and non-technical. This list is not exhaustive, but highlights some that will serve an analyst well.
You don’t have to come from a technical background, but be willing to learn the technical side of the job. Having a business background is actually helpful because it helps in understanding business problems, understanding the business itself, and creating insights for stakeholders. It helps to ask the right questions to understand the needs of the business. Technical knowledge in this field is helpful because you can lend insights into what can be delivered. As you dive deeper from a Data Analyst role to a BI Analyst role and the blending that occurs between the two, more technical skills are required such as SQL. I would recommend anyone in a data-driven role with a solid knowledge of Excel, SQL, and a visualization tool like Tableau.

What Is A Business Intelligence Analyst? Making Data Driven Business Decisions
Data Analytics Bootcamp from General Assembly can be a start to a career in this field.
Before bootcamps, how did you typically become a BI analyst? Is Business Intelligence a skill to learn in a bootcamp? Why?
I personally didn’t get a data degree, but learned on the job throughout my career and actually taught myself SQL. I finally got my Masters in Computer Information Systems, but that was not necessary for a career in business intelligence! At General Assembly’s Data Analytics Bootcamp, we don’t just teach the tools, but also how to formulate a hypothesis and work through an empirical process. Students build an Excel project, then a SQL project, and finally a Tableau project.
You can learn different tools and techniques for Business Intelligence in different programs such as General Assembly or micro masters offered by different colleges (these are longer). There are “boot camp programs” but they are usually little more than a one-day session. There are also full degree programs in data analytics.
